Meet the Governors
Nick Hughes - Chair of Governors and Parent Governor
After over two decades in City finance, I returned to Felpham in 2013 to launch my own business and focus on family life. I became a parent governor in 2021 when my youngest son joined BTPS, and took on the role of Chair of Governors in September 2023. Being a governor means that I help set the strategic direction of the school and ensure it is well managed both operationally and financially. As governors, we are passionate that every child should feel valued and is able to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and nurturing environment.
Outside of school, I enjoy playing squash, socialising with The Penguin Club, and walking my Cockapoo, Lottie, along the beach or in the countryside. I'm also passionate about traveling and exploring new cultures.
I'm honoured to be part of the BTPS family and am excited about what we can achieve together.
Chris Moores, Vice Chair of Governors and Co-opted Governor
I am a retired primary school deputy headteacher. I am a governor because I believe that every child is important and deserves the best possible education to equip them for the future, a belief encompassed by the Vision and Values of Bishop Tufnell C of E School.
My hobbies are spending time with friends, yoga, Tai Chi, swimming, badminton, ballroom dancing, walking my GSD and writing stories for children.
Nick Sharp, Headteacher
I am Nick Sharp and I have been the Headteacher of Bishop Tufnell CE Primary School since September 2018.
I have previously been Headteacher at two other local schools. I love being part of a school community that has children at the heart of all we do. They are the future and they deserve the very best that we can give them.

I have been at BTPS since 2016 and over the years served on all of it is sub committees as well as being Chair. As the Rector for St Mary’s I enjoy visiting the school in my capacity of priest to the school and in my capacity of ‘Wellbeing’ Governor. I am married to Jenny and we have three children, along with two dogs, one cat, a snake and numerous chickens which I breed.
Kerra Benbow, Co-Opted Governor
I have been a Governor at Bishop Tufnell for over a year and a half now and really enjoy my role as SEND Governor. I am a teacher at a local primary school and am currently teaching year 3, but have taught all KS2 year groups across my 12 years of teaching. I have two children who attend Bishop Tufnell and a third who will also hopefully start in a few years time. I decided to take on the challenge of Governor as I feel like I can help support the school with my knowledge and understanding of the education system.
Rachel Hutchins, Staff Governor
I love teaching at Bishop Tufnell because we are a creative and nurturing school. Being a primary teacher is a privilege as we teach more than numbers, facts and grammar, and over many years see the whole child growing and developing. Before primary teaching I worked in adult education, language teaching and Sure Start family centres. Being staff governor is important to me as I represent our teachers and get to see the bigger picture which makes up our school.
David Lind, Local Authority Governor
I've recently retired from the RSPCA after 20 years of working in the finance department. During retirement I'm looking to have more walks with our 2 rescue dogs, visiting friends & family, playing golf & growing some of our own vegetables.
Julia Carey - Foundation Governor
I live in Middleton-on-Sea and I became a governor at Bishop Tufnell 6 years ago. I want to help ensure that our local school is a school to be proud of and that all our children are enabled to be the best they can be and enjoy their primary school years. I am a retired teacher and headteacher, so I know how big the challenge is for schools and families in these days.
I am married with two grown up children and enjoy meeting up with friends and family, walking, travelling and in quieter moments, sewing. I am a member of the congregation at St. Nicholas' Church.
Peter French - Foundation Governor
Now retired, but an active grandparent, my working background was in special education with experience of teaching in residential special and mainstream primary schools. I became headteacher of a primary pupil referral unit and two hospital schools in Surrey and then a local authority education officer in Sutton assisting with decisions on school placements for children with special educational needs.
I came into my school governor role when the local church was seeking a representative to support this very good C of E Primary School, initially as an associate governor. I have been impressed by the professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm of the staff and by the co-operation between the school and governors to ensure the best possible learning environment for our children. A priority for me is that, whether or not they find faith, each child is enabled to develop their full potential, to cultivate an enquiring mind and to explore, understand and treat the world around them with care, kindness and compassion, as embodied in the school values and vision.
Liz Wand - Foundation Governor
I am a retired teacher and Grannie. I have taught in a variety of schools: in Barnet, London; with Service Children's Education abroad and in rural Oxfordshire.
I moved to Middleton-on-Sea seven years ago and became a member of St Mary's, Felpham . As a parishioner, I volunteered to become a Foundation Governor. I particularly value the caring, nourishing and safe ethos of Bishop Tufnell. I enjoy supporting the strategic direction of the school and being involved with the school community.
I enjoy walking, gardening, reading, completing puzzles and spending time with family and friends.
Jo McCarthy - Foundation Governor
I am a retired teacher having taught key stage 2 for 35 years (over 30 of them being at Bishop Tufnell). I enjoy spending time with my grandson whom I care for 2 days a week. In my spare time I love singing, playing the piano, cello and sewing. I sing in St Mary’s Church choir and play the piano for services when the organist is on holiday. I also help out at the food table in St Mary’s Centre weekly.
Having retired, I still enjoy being part of the Bishop Tufnell community in my role as foundation governor which enables me to help all children at our school achieve all that they are capable of.
Janet Yeates - Foundation Governor
