‘A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.’ Computing programme of Study, DfE, 2013

At Bishop Tufnell CE Primary School we see Computing and the use of ICT as an integral part of teaching and learning and see it playing a significant role in the education of all children in our school. ICT underpins today’s modern lifestyle, it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world. We aim for:

  • Children to have a positive experience of ICT, appreciate its relevance in our society see it as an essential tool for learning, communication, finding information and for controlling and understanding their environment.
  • Computing to be presented as a creative and fascinating process in which children are encouraged to use their own initiative, imagination, reasoning and investigative skills.
  • All children become thoughtful and safe users of ICT and develop their ICT capability to the best of their ability.
  • Children learn to use ICT to support their learning, both individually and collaboratively.

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

EYFS

Children are taught to respect, handle and use a range of technologies to further their learning. Children become familiar with using a computer, begin to word process, develop graphical skills, present information and develop skills across the Foundation Stage Curriculum. They will use a range of age appropriate software including BusyThings, Education City(some of which has home access). Children will become competent using other ICT equipment including: BeeBots and remote devices, digital cameras and magnifying devices.

KS 1

Children continue to be taught to respect, handle and use a range of technologies to enhance and develop their learning. They will follow programs of study from the National Curriculum to develop their understanding and competence in e-safety, word processing and graphics, and Coding. They will use a range of age appropriate software to support their learning including: BusyThings, Education City, Microsoft Office, and TT Rockstars (some of which has home access). Children will use other ICT equipment including: BeeBots, digital cameras, magnifying devices, video and sound recorders.

Lower KS 2

In Lower KS2, the children will continue their journey of respecting, handling and using a range of technologies to enhance their learning. They will continue to follow programs of study from the National Curriculum to develop their understanding and competence in e-safety, word processing and graphics, and Coding. They will be expected to work with increased competence and confidence. Throughout the school day, children will gain access to different types of technology that will help them to access a wider range of resources through the use of the internet and especially selected software programs. Children will be using computers to support them with their home learning, E-safety continues to be taught in all classes.

Upper KS 2

In upper KS2, we expect that all children will have the confidence and competence to decide which technology will support their learning most appropriately. Whilst continuing to learn new skills from the National curriculum programs of study, we expect the children to be able to use their knowledge of technology to decide which programs or websites best suit their needs. Children will have independent use of a wide range of technology and will continue to be taught about the correct way to use this. E-safety continues to be taught in all classes.

For 2019-2020
