Intent
At Bishop Tufnell Primary School, we believe that a high-quality art education should engage, inspire and challenge all pupils.
Art contributes to the development of the whole child in many ways, aesthetically, emotionally, physically and socially.
Our curriculum is enriched by studying a range of works of famous, influential artists. Exploring different techniques and learning the new skills through drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.
The skills acquired are applied through cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth; for example, by sketching historical artefacts in detail.
Many areas of art link with mathematical ideas of shape and space; for example, when printing repeating patterns and designs and thinking about 3D shapes to support structures. The study of Arcimboldo and Kandinsky in year 1 are examples of this.
Pupils should be clear what the intended outcomes of their work are and have a means to evaluate, modify and improve it. This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process. We value the use of sketch books which help us to show progression and development of skills throughout school. We encourage the importance of experimentation and exploration using different techniques and media to push our creative boundaries in imaginative ways.
We hope that our children learn to appreciate how art can enrich their lives and the world around them.
Implentation
As part of this planning process, teachers need to plan the following:
- A study of portraits throughout the years in school. The children’s self-portraits will show a development of skills and progression.
- A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth.
- Allow children time to evaluate and modify and adjust their work in order to progress.
- Challenge questions for pupils to apply their learning in an open manner.
- Trips to local art museums and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience.
- A means to display and celebrate the pupils’ artwork in their class and around the school.
Impact
Our Art Curriculum is planned carefully and developed to demonstrate progression.
If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are understood to be making good progress.
we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Pupil discussions about their learning, which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work. (Teachers use pupil voice stickers)
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes.
- A celebration of art in the summer term which demonstrates progression across the school.
